If you read my ” 7 things by 7am” post you would know that washing my face is the absolute first thing that I do every morning. It brings a spirit of confidence and calm to my day. I even find that I appreciate the way my skin looks and feels au naturel when I take care of it. Personally I would rather spend time on maintaining a good base than spending time on makeup that I am going to wash off in 8 hours. This may sound like overkill for an everyday routine but it is what works for my skin and my day.
Before I get into it let me tell you about my skin. I have extremely dry skin. If I don’t moisturize at least twice daily I start to feel like my skin is getting smaller than my body. If you have oily or acne prone skin I can’t say as to whether this routine is for you. It is simply what works for me and my skin. I also have the Clarisonic smart profile spin brush system. It is not a requirement but I do notice a difference in my skin after using it. As for my skincare products I try to find brands that are safe for the environment, ethically sourced, while also being effective. Let’s dive in.
Lately I have been in love with this soapberry facial cleanser from Tree to Tub. It is low sudsing which my other thirsty-skinned friends know is a must. The company is also fair trade certified and eco-friendly. If you are interested in finding out more about their company you can find them here! I wet my clarisonic with warm water and apply 4 pumps of cleanser onto the brush head directly. I work from forehead to chin for about a minute total then wipe it off gently with a warm washcloth.
Popular commercial cleansers tend to interrupt the PH of your skin and toner is used to help restore that. As a 100% natural soap the cleanser I use has a PH level of 5.5, the same as our skin so I find this step optional. However, I rather enjoy the cooling effect left behind so I still include this. I use Thayer’s Witch Hazel Alcohol Free toning facial mist. Just a couple of spritz from a distance and you’re good to go. An 8 oz. bottle is only $10.95 and lasts forever so it is nice on your bank account too.
Vitamin C serum
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that plays a vital role in collagen reproduction. It also helps to prevent and treat damage induced by the sun’s UV rays. In short, it helps brighten up your skin. I am currently using Sweet Chef Ginger Vitamin C Serum Shot. Just apply a few drops with a gentle patting motion until absorbed. This is the step that I seem to notice makes the biggest difference in my skin’s overall appearance.
Using a retinol based product is the key step in preventing signs of aging, improving fine lines and wrinkles, and improving skin texture. My go to product for this is Honest Beauty’s Honestly Pure Retinol Serum. Apply 2 pumps in the same manner as the vitamin C serum until absorbed. It’s never too early to implement anti-aging products.
This is a crucial step in my skincare routine and is most important for those with dry skin. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant which means that it draws water to your skin and helps prevent moisture loss. It helps alleviate dry skin and also helps reduce signs of aging. I am using the Versed Hydration Station Booster with Hyaluronic Acid Facial Treatment. To save time I generally add a couple of drops of this to my retinol serum and mix them in my hand before I pat them gently onto my face.
I have an almost 5 month old so I am loving this step in this sleep deprived stage of my life. I specifically look for eye creams targeted towards those with puffy eyes or one with caffeine. Honest Beauty’s Depuff Eye Gel is my favorite. It only takes a very small amount to get the job done. I put a single tiny blob onto my ring fingers and ever so slightly dab the product onto my under eye area. In no time at all there is a noticeable difference in how alert I look and feel. It gives me a boost of confidence feeling so fresh and awake.
NEVER SKIP THIS STEP. Unless it is nighttime you are never safe from the sun’s rays. On cloudy days, rainy days, and even during winter your skin still requires protection from the sun. Products including sunscreen are not enough. You would have to use 2 full tablespoons of SPF moisturizer on your face in order to have enough sun protection. I always use a stand alone sunscreen like Neutrogena Age Shield Face Sunscreen SPF 110 and rub it in well.
I typically have to spend a pretty penny here or at least more than I would like to. It has taken me years to find a product that provides enough moisture to my skin. I have finally settled on FIRST AID BEAUTY ultra repair cream. It is wonderful. It works well for morning and night and manages to keep my skin feeling hydrated. I just scoop a small amount out with my finger and rub it into my skin until it is no longer tacky.
I know what you’re thinking. I can feel you rolling your eyes at how many steps there are. And yes, it is a lot of products but I would use twice that many applying makeup every day. It really is a simple routine and doesn’t take any more than 5 minutes from start to finish. In my opinion, 5 minutes is a small price to pay for a huge boost in confidence.
